Appointments at AGU enhance Earth and space science news coverage

16 July 2015

WASHINGTON, DC—Nanci Bompey has been promoted to Public Information Manager at the American Geophysical Union. She succeeds Peter Weiss, who in June was appointed Manager/Senior News Editor at Eos, AGU’s Earth and space science news website and magazine.

Nanci, who has been a Science Writer at AGU since 2013, will oversee all aspects of AGU’s public information program, including communicating new scientific findings presented in AGU journals and meetings to the public, primarily through media, and directing press operations at the AGU Fall Meeting and other AGU meetings. She will also play a leadership role in social media.

Peter served as Manager of Public Information at AGU since 2007, and is credited with growing the press program at the AGU Fall meeting, initiating and expanding AGU’s engagement in blogs and social media, and establishing a program of trainings and activities for scientists to help them communicate effectively with general audiences. He assumed this newly created role at Eos in June, reporting to Editor-In-Chief Barbara Richman. As Eos’ Senior News Editor, Peter is working to chart the Eos news agenda, manage its news staff, assign and edit stories, and recruit and oversee a growing pool of freelance reporters.

“We are fortunate to have two outstanding science journalists to lead the way as AGU expands its efforts to inform and engage the public about the role of Earth and space science in developing solutions for the sustainability of the planet,” said Dana Davis Rehm, AGU Director of Marketing, Communications and Engagement. “Peter’s strong news judgment and knowledge of our science will help Eos to achieve its new mission to serve as an online-first science news website for the worldwide Earth and space science community; and Nanci’s can-do attitude and drive to innovate will no doubt propel our press program to achieve even greater impact.”

Prior coming to AGU, Nanci was a managing editor at FDA Week, a weekly publication covering the Food and Drug Administration. Previously, she covered the environment and health care as a reporter at the Asheville Citizen-Times in North Carolina, and worked as a chemist at a pharmaceutical company in New Jersey. Nanci holds a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Colgate University.

Peter covered physics and technology at Science News for more than eight years before coming to AGU. He previously was a science reporter for the Contra Costa Newspapers in northern California and worked in the press office of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He has also freelanced for publications including Science, New Scientist, San Jose Mercury News, San Diego Union-Tribune, The Oregonian, Health magazine, and Earth magazine. Weiss is an alumnus of the graduate science communication program at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Prior to that, he worked as an electrical engineer, for which he was trained at Columbia University and at San Jose State University.
