Time to Go ‘All In’ On Science

WASHINGTON, DC—The following statement is attributable to American Geophysical Union (AGU) executive director/CEO Christine McEntee:

“Investments in scientific research and development in the United States have led to innovations that have grown our economy and improved our way of life. Despite these critical contributions, scientific research is critically underfunded and lingering cuts from last year’s sequester pose a huge threat to America’s capacity for innovation. But, as we heard from President Obama in tonight’s State of the Union, it is time for the United States to ‘unleash the next generation of American discovery.’

To ensure a prosperous and a sustainable future, the U.S. must recommit to being the world’s leader in scientific innovation. This requires that we invest in basic research, and support the scientists employed at Federal agencies, universities, and other institutions that benefit from Federal investment. And as the President said, we must strengthen science and technology education to help prepare the next generation of innovators. Failure to do so would ultimately weaken the nation’s economic recovery, threaten public safety and undermine our goal for a sustainable energy future.

We’re pleased to see the President recognize the transformative power of science, and we call on Congress to ensure that science funding grows in future spending bills.

We’re also pleased to see President Obama continue his commitment to addressing climate change and its impacts on communities and businesses across the country. As the President said, “Climate change is a fact.” The time for debate is over.

Now we have to take action, and that action must be based on solid, fact-based scientific information. Addressing climate change does not have to come at the expense of economic prosperity. By taking steps to address the causes and impacts of climate change we can protect our communities, strengthen national security and improve the prospects for our children’s future, while simultaneously fostering innovation and opening new avenues of opportunity for business growth and development. Failure to take action will only delay the inevitable, increasing the risks and costs for generations to come.”
