CHILE QUAKE: IT AIN’T OVER TIL IT’S OVER

Wednesday, 11 August
1100h

Researchers who conduct ultraprecise studies of changes in Earth’s shape and motion (geodesy) have observed extraordinary behavior of the crust in and around Chile in the aftermath of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the region in February. An unprecedented record of the effects of such a massive earthquake is emerging from a geodetic observatory (TIGO) in Concepción, Chile, in the heart of the quake zone, which kept its instruments operating straight through the disaster by running them on auxiliary power.

Participants:

Hayo Hase
Head, Geodetic Observatory TIGO, Universidad de Concepción, Concepción, Chile.

Session: U41A
