American Geophysical Union Announces New Director

Former NPR Exec to Lead Marketing and Communications

13 November 2013

Washington, D.C.—Dana Davis Rehm has joined the American Geophysical Union (AGU) as the organization’s director of marketing, communications and engagement. Rehm brings extensive experience developing and implementing strategies to grow visibility, audience, revenue, and impact. For the past twelve years she served in leadership roles at NPR (National Public Radio), most recently as senior vice president of marketing, communications and external relations.

Rehm will work across AGU’s content and product groups and collaborate with its members and partners to lead the creation and execution of integrated marketing and content strategies. The objective is to extend the reach of AGU content and scientific expertise, and increase dialogue and engagement among Earth and space scientists and those that value and can benefit from their work.

“In today’s environment, an organization’s success can hinge on its ability to embrace an innovative, multi-faceted marketing and communications function focused on identifying and targeting the needs of various audiences,” said Christine McEntee, AGU’s executive director/CEO. “Dana’s cross-disciplinary expertise, and her ability to create, package and distribute content to a variety of audiences across many channels, will be a major asset as we work to raise AGU’s profile and impact with members, the broader scientific community, the media and the public. I’m pleased to welcome her to the AGU team.”

“As the largest society of earth and space scientists, AGU is uniquely positioned to convey the power of science and its role in shaping a healthy and sustainable world. I am thrilled to join a community that will play an increasingly critical role in addressing some of the most pressing problems that face humanity.”

During her tenure at NPR, Rehm served in three executive positions—first as vice president of member and program services, then as senior vice president of strategy and partnerships, and finally, as senior vice president of marketing, communications and external relations. In that role, she built NPR’s corporate communications and media relations capacity, renewed its brand, and introduced public relations and corporate social media programs. She also expanded NPR events and forged partnerships with StoryCorps, the Aspen Ideas Festival and the Woodrow Wilson Center.

Prior to NPR, Rehm headed Wisconsin Public Radio, served as assistant general manager of KUOW, and controller at KJR/KLTX Radio, both in Seattle, Wash. She earned a B.A. in English from Seattle University.
