New press officer joins AGU

WASHINGTON — AGU is pleased to announce that Liza Lester has joined the society’s staff as Senior Public Information Specialist/Science Writer. She will work with Nanci Bompey, AGU’s Public Information Manager; Lauren Lipuma, AGU’s other Senior Public Information Specialist/Science Writer; and AGU’s science writing interns to communicate findings presented in AGU journals and meetings with the public, primarily through media.

Liza was most recently the Public Information Manager for the Ecological Society of America, where she identified newsworthy stories from ESA’s scholarly journals, handled press queries, wrote news releases, and managed the society’s social media channels and blog, among other outreach and science communication activities.

Liza holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Grinnell College and a PhD in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. She was a science reporting intern at The Sacramento Bee in 2011, sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Mass Media and Science Engineering Fellowship.
