The American Geophysical Union commends President Obama’s continued commitment to utilizing strategic investments in science to support a healthy economy

WASHINGTON, DC—The American Geophysical Union (AGU), the world’s largest organization of earth and space scientists, commends President Barack Obama for highlighting the importance of continuing to support publicly funded research and the discussion of other key issues related to the sciences during the State of the Union address on Tuesday, January 24.  His speech outlined the direct ties and impact the sciences have in the areas of education, energy, infrastructure and job creation in the U.S. to help build a healthier economy today and invest in our nation’s future.

“We are pleased about President Obama’s continued recognition of the critical role science can play in supporting and building a healthy economy,” said Christine McEntee, AGU’s Chief Executive Officer.  “His speech demonstrated how the sciences are intricately woven into some of the most important issues facing our nation and in doing so, highlighted the need to continue to support scientists’ research, work and innovation.”

The importance of fostering innovation in the sciences was a key theme in the President’s statements regarding future advancements and growth in the science and technology industries.

“We appreciate the efforts being made by the current administration to work toward a better future,” said McEntee. “Our hope is to have continued support of the sciences to breed innovative discoveries that have a meaningful impact on our world.”
