On 28 September 2017, the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) announced that all abstracts submitted to the Virtual Poster Showcase (VPS) will be listed in GeoRef, AGI’s premier database for geoscientific literature.
This partnership was organized by AGI’s Member Society Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Pranoti Asher, who also serves as AGU’s Manager for Higher Education (see the July 12 joint announcement from AGU and AGI announcing her new role at AGI).
Dr. Asher shared her excitement about this initiative in a September 7 email to geoscience departments around the world, a community that she engages through AGU’s Heads and Chairs Program: “VPS abstracts will soon be included in GeoRef! This will make your students’ work more easily discoverable by the geoscience community. GeoRef can help provide broad visibility of your students’ research on a global scale as it is currently accessed by more than 2,400 geoscience institutions worldwide and is regarded as a reliable source for references to geoscience publications.”
Christopher Keane and Sharon Tahirkheli, AGI’s Directors of Communications & Technology and Information Services, respectively, were instrumental in this effort, which also aggregates 240 abstracts from previous years of the Showcase.
AGI Member Society Liaison Joseph Lilek applauded this new collaboration and said, “As students search for research mentors and mentors seek out prospective students, we are all benefited by making documented research experiences more easily discoverable online. The inclusion of the VPS abstracts does just that, and it was a natural step to advance an already impressive program at AGU.”
