WASHINGTON — Calls for active interventions in Earth’s climate system are gaining momentum as the consequences of climate change are felt in heat waves, flooding, wild weather and unraveling ecosystems.

Experts will delve into the ethics and potential risks and benefits of climate intervention strategies for people and the planet, including solar radiation modification and carbon removal, at AGU’s 2024 Annual Meeting (AGU24) to be held 9-13 December in Washington, D.C.

AGU is the largest global community for the Earth and space sciences, and the meeting is expected to draw more than 26,000 experts to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center next week.

In this advisory:

  1. Ethical framework principles for climate intervention research
  2. Suggested geoengineering presentations
  3. Full conference sessions focused on geoengineering
  4. Press registration and on-site press rooms

1. Ethical framework for climate intervention research

In October, AGU released recommendations, advised by a global panel of experts, designed to guide responsible decision-making and inclusive dialogue on research related to geoengineering, also known as climate intervention. Several events offer opportunities to engage on the framework:

  • Press roundtable: Experts to Discuss Geoengineering Ethics and COP29
Tuesday, 10 December 16:30 ET; Woodley park room, (Marriott Marquis M3)
Learn about key take-ways, early reception by the community and upcoming actions. Press roundtables are held in person in the Press Rooms and livestreamed for remote reporters. View the full press event schedule here.
  • Frontiers of Geophysics Plenary Panel: Climate Intervention Research Issues and Opportunities: Navigating a Thoughtful and Inclusive Path Forward
Tuesday, 10 December 2024 12:30 ET; Hall E (Convention Center)
Invited experts to provide perspectives on climate intervention research in a moderated question and answer format.
  • Union Session: Social and ethical dimensions of sustainable development of the oceans
    Tuesday, 10 December 2024, 16:00 – 17:30 ET in Ballroom A (Convention Center)
AGU’s Executive Vice President for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Billy Williams will discuss the Framework’s recommendations.
